Get to Know Me

The Beginning

The dog that started it all for me was a 9 month old Australian Shepherd named Mac. He had missed critical socialization for those first 9 months of his life, coupled with a questionable genetic history. The result was a highly reactive dog that didn’t trust strange people or dogs. I was 12 when I got Mac, and I found out quickly that I had a lot to learn.

I spent all of my spare time pouring through educational materials related to dogs. My research consisted of everything from books, YouTube videos, and in-person classes to learn how to help my best friend.

Mac went from reactive to almost all strange people/dogs, to a 4-H Agility State Champion (and Reserved Champion in Rally-Obedience). He also competed in AKC Agility and received multiple titles.

Nothing helps me understand owners more than remembering how I felt trying to help Mac. I saw the best side in him, where others saw a “bad dog,” but I wanted to help others see his best side as well. The process of training Mac would have been smoother if I knew then what I know now, but I wouldn’t have had the valuable learning experiences.

Education

My study of canine behavior continued throughout college, where I obtained my Bachelor of Science in Animal Science at Michigan State University. Before I pursued a career as a dog trainer, I was studying to become a veterinarian. After college, I continued my work with dogs by participating in dog sports, including disc and agility.

Experience

I spent 2.5 years as a full-time dog trainer after an apprenticeship period, working with a wide variety of cases. I had the opportunity to work with everything from excitable puppies, rescues that were fearful and anxious, to adult dogs that struggled with severe behavioral issues.

The hands on experience with all types of dogs provided the type of education that books and videos couldn’t. Further education in canine behavior is something I continue to pursue, and am passionate about staying up to date with the industry to provide the best training for people and their dogs.

I am a CGC Approved Evaluator and hold a membership with the International Association of Canine Professionals (IACP).

I currently compete in Agility, Disc, and Rally with my 4 year-old Aussie, Arrow. Sigurd is my 2 year-old German Shepherd who trains in Search and Rescue as well as competes in Agility, Rally, Disc, and Obedience.
